New Jersey MENTOR staff members took part in the Walk Now For Autism Speaks event on Sunday, October 6 at Mercer County Community College. New Jersey MENTOR’s Ashley Lamb and Brooke Christine had an informational table set up through the day, joining numerous vendors on hand. They helped to support awareness of autism while also providing information about New Jersey MENTOR and its programs, specifically the Host Home and Therapeutic Foster Care programs.
Walk Now for Autism Speaks is the nation’s largest grassroots autism walk program. It is organized by Autism Speaks as its signature fundraising and awareness event that takes place in communities across the country.
“We are really glad that New Jersey MENTOR was able to join other organizations and members of the community in raising awareness for autism,” said Ashley, a Mentor recruiter. “It was a pleasure to speak with the individuals and families stopped by our table. Everyone had a great time at the event, especially all of the children who stopped by and enjoyed our craft table.”
This was the second year that Ashley had attended the event as a representative of New Jersey MENTOR. She said that this year’s event was even better than the last. In addition to spreading the word about New Jersey MENTOR’s mission, Ashley and Brooke were able to connect with several individuals who were interested in opening their homes as Mentors.
A total of $175,948 was raised for the fight against autism. The day featured the walk, as well as a 5K, appearances by a local radio station and fitness-related events like rock climbing.
“It’s great that we are able to team up with Autism Speaks and help support their mission by being there and sharing our programs with people,” Ashley said. “It was a wonderful time speaking with everyone, answering their questions and having some fun.”
